2020 Phelps Santa Project
The Phelps First Department and the Phelps Fire Department Auxiliary is once again teaming up to sponsor the Phelps Santa Project and is looking for the community to help make this Christmas a little brighter for the children in Phelps. The Santa project was started in 2011 as a way to send some added Christmas joy to children in the Phelps community who may not receive many gifts due to tough economic situations in their family.
This year especially has been a most interesting and challenging. Many parents are juggling working outside the home and arranging to have their children learn virtually or attend in person school. This has caused an economic crisis in many of the Phelps community homes.
The Phelps School gives the fire department Santa project coordinator a list including number of children. gender, ages, sizes and a gift the child would enjoy. Most of the lists from the children are very unselfish asking for jackets, hats, gloves, bedding and of course, toys. Volunteers shop for the items and other volunteers wrap the presents. Twenty-six children received gifts last year.
Funding for this project comes from several sources; the Phelps Fire Department Christmas party raffles with matching funds from the Fire Department Auxiliary and the community. After the need had grown 5 years ago, the department reached out to the community for donations. Donations can be sent to The Phelps Santa Project, 4792 Grosser Lane, Phelps, WI 54554. Make checks payable to the Phelps Firemen’s Auxiliary. The Auxiliary is a 501C3 nonprofit organization so your donation is tax deductible. The 2020 deadline for donations is Tuesday December 1. Todd Bierman, fireman, said, “The Phelps community is a wonderful place to live and visit.
Let’s make this Christmas more special for our greatest asset, our children
